Where are the signposts for the energy storage market?

With the continuous promotion of the two-carbon strategy, in addition to the traditional power generation side and grid side customers, more user-side industrial and commercial owners began to take the initiative to understand the “niche” energy storage.

 

On April 9, Tesla officially announced that its energy storage gigafactory project was located in Shanghai, which will specialize in the production of its energy storage product Megapack, with an annual capacity of nearly 40GWh of energy storage batteries planned for the initial stage.

 

Energy storage LCOS (levelled energy storage cost) is a core parameter commonly used in the industry to describe the economics of energy storage. It is calculated by dividing the life-cycle cost of an energy storage technology by the cumulative electrical energy or power transferred. Long life, large cell, is to reduce energy storage LCOS.

 

In addition to longer cycle life, large capacity cell is also a selling point pursued by many manufacturers. Early energy storage cells were mainly 50~100Ah products, and last year 280Ah cells dominated the market. And in this year, many energy storage manufacturers have launched more than 300Ah energy storage cell, such as Trina Energy Storage 306Ah cell, vision power 315Ah cell, Penghui Energy 320Ah cell. In addition, Yi Wei Lithium Energy also launched 560Ah super capacity energy storage cell.

 

In the face of fierce competition, but the profit margin is not high market, energy storage companies how to find the real roadmap forward?

 

New energy distribution storage, shared energy storage mode, user-side energy storage and other business models are gradually emerging, but the effect is limited.

 

Under the background that the domestic electricity market mechanism is not mature, some energy storage manufacturers have set their eyes on the overseas market. The large fluctuations of electricity price have brought a strong driving force for users to purchase energy storage products.

 

CNESA announced in its latest Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2023 that under a conservative scenario, the cumulative scale of new energy storage in China is expected to reach 97.0GW in 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 49.3% from 2023 to 2027. In an ideal scenario, the cumulative scale of new energy storage is expected to reach 138.4GW in 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 60.3% from 2023 to 2027.

 

The year 2023 is known as the first year of energy storage explosion. More energy storage manufacturers are also looking forward to the further opening of the power market this year, which will drive the virtuous cycle of the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain.
